Ask the Frenchie Geek - Urine Damage on Lawns?
bullmarketfrogs June 3rd, 2008
I need some help/advice regarding grass burn. The acidity in my little frencie’s urine is so strong that it literally kills the grass in my yard. As a result, I am constantly putting down grass seeds in my seemingly fruitless effort to keep my yard looking halfway decent. Could it be her diet? She is currently on Eukanuba.
Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Since I’ve never personally had any luck keeping my lawn looking like anything other than a mass of tangled crab grass interspersed with brown spots, I decided to turn to the larger French Bulldog community for help (specifically, the FrenchBulldog-L mailing list).
Here are a few of the tips they had to share:

I have heard that cranberry capsules in the diet will change the ph level and help but haven’t tried it myself.

I know there are products out there that you put in their food, what I don’t know is if they work. Also, spayed bitches urine is not as bad as intact bitch urine, I’ve only had girls so I don’t know about boys.

Drs Foster and Smith make a product called Lawn Guard that worked very well for us in the past. I’ve also heard that giving your dog a tsp of tomato juice helps.

Water the lawn a lot in the spots right away. And feed more water to the dogs too, to weaken the urine.
